PATRICK BROWN, MIKE HARRIS HEADLINE 30th ANNUAL ISLAND FUNDRAISER AUGUST 20
July 11, 2016

Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown and former two-term premier Mike Harris will headline the annual Afternoon in the Islands fundraiser on Saturday, August 20, the Leeds-Grenville Provincial Progressive Conservative Association announced today.

This is the 30th anniversary of the popular event, started when now-Senator Bob Runciman was the riding’s MPP and carried on since 2010 by his successor, Steve Clark. The event will take place at the Glen House Resort near Ivy Lea.

“I’m proud to carry on the tradition started 30 years ago by Senator Runciman. With this being a milestone anniversary, we wanted to make sure we had a strong lineup of special guests,” said Clark. “We are delighted that both Patrick Brown and Mike Harris will be joining us.”

“I think this may be the longest-running political fundraiser in Canada,” Runciman said. “Mike Harris doesn’t do these sorts of events very often, but when I reached out to him to attend the 30th anniversary of Afternoon in the Islands, he was more than willing to join us. He’s been to the event several times in the past, including when he was premier, and always enjoyed himself.”

Harris, who was elected as an MPP in 1981, became leader of the party in 1990 and won two consecutive majority governments in 1995 and 1999 before resigning and returning to private life in 2002.

Brown served as a federal MP from 2006-2015, before winning the Ontario PC leadership in May 2015.

“This is not only the longest-running fundraiser around, it’s also the most enjoyable,” said MPP Clark, noting it offers live music, an open bar, lobster and beef buffet, boat tours and special door prizes – all in a stunning setting on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in the heart of the Thousand Islands.

Tickets for Afternoon in the Islands are $150, and include a significant income tax receipt. They are available by calling riding association president Barry Raison at 613-802-9448, chief financial officer Dawn Latourell at 613-258-4280, or fundraising chair Rob Horton at 613-345-3436. They are also available online here.
